Men's Therapy/Personal Growth GroupA place to improve your ability to relate and connect with others, especially other menIn our society, men often lack an environment in which they can feel comfortable talking about what really matters to them, especially with other men. No wonder men succumb to stress related illnesses at an early age, usually earlier than women do. “I can talk here in a way I cannot anywhere else in my life” is a theme that runs throughout the group. This group has been in existence for eleven years, and two of the original members still attend because they continue to benefit from the group. All the men are committed to their healing and growth and welcome other men who are similarly committed. The men’s group is a place to improve your ability to receive and give support, particularly where other men are involved. It is a place to bring issues of significance that you are struggling to improve in your life. It is a place to establish relationships and to work with the difficulties with doing relationships. In group, you can improve your ability to connect with yourself and others. Group is about emotional responsiveness and attentiveness. The subject matter is the interpersonal and intrapersonal issues that hold interest, vitality and heart in the moment. Attention is given to creating essential external and internal supports for doing the work. I like members to have completed or be in individual therapy and to demonstrate readiness to benefit from group therapy. If you are in addiction recovery, I prefer two year’s sobriety but a minimum of one year. Although we help group members manage crises that arise in their lives, group is not about ongoing crisis management. You should have stability in your level of everyday functioning. Group members make a significant commitment. They have an initial interview, complete an intake form and sign an agreement to abide by the rules of the group. They commit to a series of ten groups after which they may terminate or elect to commit to another ten. The group meets at my office at 615 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon, in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Eight members is the maximum size. As openings occur, we add new members. We meet every other Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 in the evening. We have a fall series of ten sessions beginning in September and a spring series beginning in early February. We are off from mid-June to early September. Contact me at my e-mail address if you are interested.
