Carmen Accetta, M.S.Ed

An educator, counselor and therapist for over forty-five years

I have been an educator, counselor and therapist for over forty-five years.  My professional roots are in the addiction treatment field.  I was a primary drug and alcohol therapist at two of the major rehabs and one HMO in the Pittsburgh area for ten years.  I have done addiction treatment at all levels from inpatient to intensive outpatient including working with the family component of programs.

I have been in private practice for thirteen years.  I currently work with a broad range of client issues.  My clients come for help with addictions or the effects of someone else’s addiction on them, relationship problems and low self-esteem.  Many of my clients are doing reasonably well in most areas of their lives but need my help in moving beyond some “stuck” place that has limited their personal growth and sense of well-being.  They do well and look good on the outside, but they don’t feel good inside, and they want to feel better and get on with their life.

I am a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, and I received my Master’s Degree in Counseling from Duquesne University.  I have completed four years of post master’s degree work at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland with specializations in working with individuals and working with physical process.  I continue deepening and broadening my skills as a Gestalt therapist through an ongoing study/supervision group with one of my instructors from the Gestalt Institute.

Family has been a very important part of my development as a person and therapist.  I grew up as the youngest of eight children, four sisters and three brothers.  My mother was widowed when I was five and did not remarry.  We grew up as a close knit family united behind her.  My wife and I will celebrate our forty-third wedding anniversary this year.  We have seven daughters and eleven grandchildren.  I find my immersion in family and my experience helping to raise children has helped me to work more effectively with clients.
